Our Australian Market!

This is the first time that we have had market for 4 days and it was an awesome experience!  The children got an opportunity to save the money that they had earned so that they could shop on multiple days.  They also got the chance to earn more money throughout the week by working in our store or by making more of our "hot ticket" items!  Market was a huge success!

Our Chicks are Hatching!!

I came to school this afternoon to check on the chicks, and I could not believe what I saw! Several of our chicks were hatching! So far, five have hatched and several more eggs have cracks in them.  Here are some pictures from inside the incubator.

After they hatch, the chicks are very wet and tired.  They just lay down right where they are and take a nap.  The chicks that are fluffy hatched first.

I have my I-Pod sitting on the incubator so that you can see the next chick to hatch!  Here is the video!

Here are two more hatching videos.

Tadpoles and Caterpillars and Chicks..Oh My!

Over the weekend, I set up our incubator and by Monday afternoon, the temperature inside was a perfect 100 degrees!  When the children came to school on Tuesday morning, they were very eggcited to find 15 eggs safely inside!  This week, we have learned all about eggs, chicks and chickens.  We even found a website that shows us exactly what is happening inside our eggs!  According to our research, our chicks will hatch in 21 days.  That means that on April 23 or 24th we should have new chicks!

Each egg is labeled with an X and an O.  We turn the eggs each morning and afternoon like the mother hen would do!

Wednesday afternoon we got another exciting arrival.  Our newest tadpole was delivered to our classroom!  We haven't named it yet but I'll let you know as soon as the children decide to give it a name.

Both the eggs and the tadpole are in the science/discovery center with Cutie (our hamster).  The children have really loved going to this center.  They are making observations and noting them in the observation logs, reading books and learning lots about each of the animals we have in our classroom!  Here are some pictures of the science/discovery center with our new animals.  I will add more soon!

The children don't know it yet, but our caterpillars should be arriving soon!

Oobleck!

Our Dr. Suess author study ended with the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  Everyone loved reading the book so much that we decided to experiment with our own green Oobleck!

We made predictions before we began to explore this cool substance.  Here are a few pictures!

After exploring Oobleck, we discussed its properties and tried to decide if we could walk on it or not.  Here is what we thought would happen.

Watch this video to see what happens if you walk on Oobleck!

Our New Class Pet

This weekend, Mrs. Shelton noticed that her two hamsters were not getting along.  She decided that they needed to be separated and asked if we wanted a new class pet.  We now have a very sweet hamster!!!  We haven't named her yet but I did notice a short list of suggestions that someone wrote down and put by her home.

Of course we will be reading lots about hamsters and doing a bit of research so that we can take good care of our new friend!
Everyone loved getting to meet her and watch her roll around in her exercise ball!  I think that she is going to be a great addition to our classroom.
