The Farm Comes to CWES!

This morning, Auburn University's AG in the Classroom program brought the farm to Cary Woods!  We learned about soil, crops and farm ANIMALS!  It was a great morning and we learned so much.  I took too many pictures to post, so watch the slide show and see the fun!

Ladybugs...Part 3

After keeping our ladybugs in the classroom, it was time to let release them into their natural habitat. So, after lunch, we took them outside and set them free!

We didn't expect them to stick around and fly right onto us!  That was very cool!  Hopefully, we will see some of our ladybugs hanging out in the courtyard.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar...Part 2

Over the weekend, our very hungry caterpillars emerged from their chrysalises! We were all amazed at how many beautiful butterflies we had in our net.

Even though we knew that the red stuff on the bottom of the net was the extra coloring from their wings, some of us were a bit concerned.

We will observe the butterflies for a couple of more days and then we will release them into the courtyard.

Eggs

With Mrs. McHugh and Mrs. Burn's help, our 3rd LIVE delivery went into the incubator a few days after Spring Break!

If you're counting, that's 24 eggs!

The children love to look inside the incubator, but they are very careful not to disturb it!  To keep up with what is happening inside our eggs, we use these model eggs.

Each day, we open another egg and see what is happening then we record it in our observation books.

Hatching Day is coming soon!!!!

Our Newest Addition

Tuesday, our 4th LIVE delivery arrived!  It was a tadpole!  It doesn't have a name yet, but we will be naming it soon.

Each day, we will be observing our tadpole and writing in an observation log.  We can't wait to see him turn into a frog!

Ladybugs...Part 2

We came in on Monday and our lady bug pupa had changed into ladybugs!

We learned that adult ladybugs like to eat raisins that have been soaked in water.  Lucky for us, Ian had raisins for his snack!  We soaked one in water and put it in the Ladybug Land.

It looks like they really do like raisins.

The Very Hungry Caterpillars

This week, we had our second LIVE delivery and it was a BIG one!  CATERPILLARS!!!  I had ordered enough for each child to have their very own caterpillar to observe.  When we opened the box, the company had sent us enough caterpillars for everyone to have 3 caterpillars to observe!

Each day, the children observe their caterpillars and write about it in their observation books.

At first the caterpillars were very tiny, but they quickly grew and made chrysalises.  Once every caterpillar in a cup had formed chrysalises, we moved them to the butterfly net.

Now, we're just waiting!
