Read Across America Week Part 1

This week we had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday and kicking off Read Across America!  We read lots of great books and had fun exploring Dr. Seuss' world.

One of our favorite activities was making Oobleck!  We read the book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  The children loved it and made lots of predictions about about what Oobleck was.

First, we used our senses to describe the Oobleck.  Then we got down and dirty exploring the gooey, green substance!

We made a chart to compare our predictions with what we actually discovered.

We also used what we learned about Oobleck to talk about solids and liquids.

The children decided that the things in the middle could be both solids and liquids.

Finally, I asked the children if they thought it was possible to walk on Oobleck.  Only one friend thought it was possible.

Watch the video below and see who was right!

The Arctic Ocean

After researching a little bit about all of the 5 oceans, we took a vote to see which ocean we would be visiting first.

There was a tie between the Arctic and the Pacific Oceans, so, we had a runoff!  It was close, but the Arctic Ocean won!

We started our research by listing all of the things that we already know about the Arctic Ocean.
Then, we listed all of the things that we wanted to learn with our research.
As we did our research, we made a list of the things that we had learned.

Each day, a different group of friends researched to find the answers to the questions that we had written.  Then, they told the class all about what they had discovered.

We also made a web of everything that we had learned.

B-I-N-G-O!

The children learned to play a new math game this week.
5+ Bingo has become a big hit!  Now that everyone has played at least once, it is going into the math center so that friends can play it whenever they want.

Caroline W. was our expert.  She taught all of our friends how to play.

The Sweetest Day of the Year!

The children did such a great job decorating their Valentine boxes!  They were so creative and just perfect for the sweet treats that went inside.

Next, we had a special surprise....heart shaped cookies and brownies!

We finished the day with a "Sweetheart" graph for our math journals.

We had such a great time at the Montgomery Zoo!  The weather was great and the scavenger hunt was a HUGE success!  Thank you to all of the parents who came and helped make this day so special.
