Building the Plane and Airport

The preparations for our flight to Australia have begun!  Orange pod is such a busy place as each class builds their part of the plane and aiprot.  We are also busy making our suitcases, filing out our passports, tickets and luggage tags.

We made suitcases out of pizza boxes.

After making our suitcases, we filled out our passports.

We used feet taped to the door to see how tall we were.

Our class was responsible for building the airport's security equipment.  We needed to build the x-ray machine and the metal detector.
Everyone signed up for the construction job that they wanted to do.

Frist we made the metal detector out of coke boxes.

We taped them together.

Then we had to paint them.

Our next project was the x-ray machine.
We started with a large cardboard box.

Next, we added support to help it stand up.

We painted it.

The next group, made the computer screen so that the security agents could see inside the suitcases.

Finally, we made the conveyer belt that allows the suitcases to pass through the x-ray machine.

This is what our airport and airplane looked like!

The Orange Pod Visits the Airport!

To prepare for our flight to Australia, we took a trip to the Auburn/Opelika Airport.  The staff at the Airport did an amazing job and we learned many interesting things.  We even got to see 5 jets land on the runway right in front of us!  To top it off, one of the pilots let us sit inside of the jet he was flying!

Our first rotation was the plane.  We got to see a real plane up close.  They showed us the landing gear, tail, wings, nose, flaps and airlerons.  However the best part was the cockpit!  Everyone got to sit inside a real cockpit!

Our next rotation was the line.  At this rotation, we learned how to direct and park planes.  While we were on the line, something great happened...the Auburn University jet landed right in front of us!

We learned how to get the plane to turn right, left and stop!

This is how you park an airplane!

After the line, we visited the hanger.  We talked about the parts of the airplane and how they help the pilot fly the plane.

After the hanger, we went inside and took a picture with Bob, the airport's tiger.

Our final rotation was the fuel station.  We learned how the line crew fuel the planes.

ACS Fall Festival has been Rescheduled

The Auburn City Schools Fall Festival has been postponed due to today’s chance of rain.  The National Weather Service and the Lee County Emergency Management Agency confirm that this afternoon’s chance of precipitation is 50-80% with the potential for isolated thunderstorms.

The Fall Festival has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 27, 5:00-8:00 at Duck Samford.
All events, tickets, and volunteer schedules will be transferred to next week’s scheduled rain date.

It is with great appreciation for the parent volunteers and an understanding of our excited students that we regret the inability to advance as planned.

Thank you making plans to join us next week!

STAR Night

Students and Teachers in Academics and Recreation
Math was the focus of our first STAR night for the 2011-2012 school year and it was a huge success!  Whether your favorite activity was the life-sized Tic-Tac-Toe or Hop to It games, the long jump, the table games, the P.E. equipment or HILL SLIDING, everyone seemed to have a great time!  Whiskers, our AEEC mascot made several appearances and Kona Ice provided extra refreshment.  Our next STAR night will be in the Spring and will have Science activities for everyone!
