Our Apple Tree Part 3...The Branches

Our third group, worked on the branches.

They decided to make the branches out of light brown paper so that they would not look like the roots.

This group used different sizes of paper so that the branches would look more like a real tree.

Like the root group, they decided to twist the paper and tape the ends.

Meeting Cutie

I introduced the Biology Center to the class today.  Everyone was super excited to find out that Biology was the study of living things and that Cutie was a living thing!

We will start researching hamsters soon.  Check back to find out what we learn!

Our Apple Tree...Part 2...The Trunk

Our next group worked on the trunk.   They decided that apple tree trunks are solid, so they wanted our trunk to have a solid inside.

1.  Make a circle with brown paper.
2.  Put three tubes together.
3.  Wrap paper around tubes to make a cylinder.
4.  Connect roots to trunk.

They tried step 1. but it didn't work, so the trunk group decided to skip it.

For the bark, this group decided to use brown butcher paper.  We measured the length of the trunk so that we knew how much paper to cut.

After the paper was cut, they decided to crumple up the paper to make it look rough like tree bark.

Finally, our root group came back and put the roots around the apple tree trunk.

Our Apple Tree...Part 1...The Roots

After learning about the parts of an apple tree, the children signed up for the construction job that they wanted to work on.

Our root group went first.  Ella, Tate and Jordan came up with a construction plan.

Our Plan for the Roots
1.  Twist the brown paper.
2.  Tape it on the end.
3.  Staple the pieces together.

Then, they began to make the roots!
